Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded to your server?

No. Everything happens inside your browser using JavaScript -- your image is never uploaded anywhere.

Does this use AI to detect the subject?

No. This tool removes background by color, not by understanding what's a "subject" -- it compares every pixel's color to the background color you picked, and makes close matches transparent. It works best on a photo with a fairly solid, even-colored background (a plain wall, a studio backdrop, a product shot on white). It won't cleanly separate a subject from a busy or textured background, since there's no AI figuring out what the subject actually is.

Why does it need to be a JPG?

JPGs can't store transparency at all -- that's exactly why this tool exists. It reads your JPG, works out which pixels are background, and saves a PNG (a format that does support transparency) with those pixels made see-through.

The edges look a bit rough -- can I fix that?

Try lowering the tolerance for a tighter, cleaner cut, or raising it if too much of the subject is being removed. The tool also softens the boundary a little automatically rather than cutting a hard edge, to avoid a jagged outline.
