Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded to your server?

No. Everything happens inside your browser -- your image is never uploaded anywhere.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than a JPG of the same photo?

PNG is a lossless format -- great for screenshots, logos, and graphics with sharp edges or flat colors, but it doesn't compress photos nearly as well as JPG, which is built specifically for photographic detail. Converting a photo that happens to be saved as PNG to JPG can shrink it dramatically with barely any visible quality loss.

What quality setting should I use?

85% is a good default for most photos -- noticeably smaller than the PNG with no visible quality loss. Go lower (50-70%) if file size matters more than visual quality, like a quick email attachment; stay higher (90%+) for anything you might print or zoom into.

What happens to transparent areas?

They're filled white. JPG has no way to store transparency at all, so any transparent or semi-transparent pixels in your PNG become solid white in the JPG.
